CALL FOR PAPERS:Forthcoming Special Issue on Regulation of Autonomic Nervous System

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is part of the nervous system that has two divisions: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The ANS involuntarily regulates body functions to ensure normal homeostasis including cardiovascular and respiratory control, thermal regulation, gastrointestinal motility, normal metabolic and endocrine physiology, and adaptive responses to stress (fight or flight response). However, dysregulation of ANS or dysautonomia develops in many neurological diseases as a consequence of/or a casual primary disease. This condition is also called autonomic neuropathy and ranges from mild to life-threatening with an impact on part of (or the entire) ANS. Many studies have been focused on understanding the neural mechanisms of autonomic dysfunction in diseases such as orthostatic hypotension, postural tachycardia syndrome, syncope, depression, malignant hyperthermia, cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, and metabolic disorders. Therefore, regulation of the autonomic function could provide a potential therapy for the above referred dysautonomia. However, how the pathological change of ANS underlies the neural mechanism of these neurological diseases has not been well understood yet. Therefore, we invite our colleagues to contribute original research articles as well as reviews to address the neural mechanisms and significance of autonomic dysfunction in the pathogenesis of these diseases. In addition, Report, Letter, Perspective and Research Highlight are also welcome. Invited articles for this special issue should not have been published nor are under review by other journals.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
● The autonomic nervous system: structure, function and development
● Physiological mechanism and signal pathway of regulation of the autonomic nervous system
● Neural mechanisms in regulating autonomic function of the cardiovascular system, respiratory system and gastrointestinal system
● Pathophysiological and toxicological mechanisms and signal pathways of the autonomic nervous system
● Neural mechanisms regulating autonomic dysfunction in the cardiovascular system such as cardiac arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death, neurogenic hypertension, and congestive heart failure
● Neural mechanisms regulating autonomic dysfunction in the respiratory system such as hypoxia and sleep apnea
● Neural mechanisms regulating autonomic dysfunction in metabolic disorders including type II diabetes and obesity.
● Dysautonomia related to neural plasticity in response to external environmental changes such as stress and traumatic brain injury, hormonal and/or neurotransmitter imbalances leading to autonomic dysfunction
● Clinical research and therapeutic approaches for neuropathies affecting the autonomic nervous system

Authors should submit their manuscripts through the Manuscript Tracking System at https://mc03.manuscriptcentral.com/nsb
